Habitat Launches a New Personal Finance Program for Families Impacted by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Gulfport, MS (January 25, 2012) - After years of successfully helping hundreds of Gulf Coast families achieve their goals of homeownership; Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast (HFHMGC) is now offering an exciting new program to help motivated individuals and families achieve personal financial goals beyond homeownership.

INVEST IN YOURSELF – FINANCIAL FOUNDATIONS is a personal finance education and counseling program designed to equip individuals with the tools needed to reclaim control of their finances.  Courses and counseling will cover a variety of topics including credit repair, developing a family savings & spending plan, rental counseling, foreclosure prevention, and much more.  Through an array of seminars, workshops and one-on-one counseling, participants will have the opportunity to learn valuable financial management skills and work with a Habitat program specialist to craft their own individualized action plan.

The program is launching through the support of a grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s Fund for Gulf Communities.  The purpose of this grant is to address the unmet needs of individuals and families significantly affected by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.  “HFHMGC is offering priority enrollment in this new program to anyone who worked in an oil spill related industry and/or experienced a loss or reduction in household income as a result of the oil spill”, said Dorothy Hodge-Wells, Habitat Program Specialist overseeing the program.  Filing of a BP claim is not required to be eligible.

To kick off the program, HFHMGC is hosting an offering of Financial Peace University (FPU), a renowned 13-week course which focuses on personal money management with an emphasis on living debt-free.  FPU was designed by Dave Ramsey, personal finance expert, popular national radio personality, and author of three New York Times bestsellers.  The classes will begin on Tuesday, February 7th and run through May 1, 2012.  Sessions will be held from 6-8 p.m. at HFHMCG office located at 2214 - 34th Street in Gulfport.  A free orientation session will be held on Tuesday, January 31st.  Each family will be required to purchase a membership kit for $50.
