Students volunteer with Habitat during Spring Break

Biloxi, MS. (February 17, 2011) – This Spring Break, over 385 students will volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast (HFHMGC) as part of the Collegiate Challenge program. Collegiate Challenge is Habitat International’s national alternative break program.

Students from 19 colleges and universities from 13 different states and 1 Canadian province will spend their spring break working with HFHMGC. Between February 22st and April 2nd, the student groups will each spend a week working with HFHMGC construction staff and other volunteers on home build sites across the Gulf Coast.

HFHMGC has participated in the Collegiate Challenge program each year since 2007. Some students have opted to return for a second trip, recruiting new volunteers in the process. “It is my hope that the new volunteers will have the same humbling, heart-felt experience that I had last year, and that they will continue this new tradition for many years to come,” says Amanda Crossman of St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada.

For the past 22 years, more than 182,000 students have spent their school breaks volunteering across the country through Habitat’s Collegiate Challenge program. The program is one of many Habitat programs designed to engage youth ages 5 to 25 in Habitat’s work. Since 2007, State Farm has served as the national corporate sponsor of Habitat for Humanity’s youth programs, with a sponsorship commitment of more than $1.1 million in grants each year. Additionally, State farm offices contribute more than $500,000 annually to Habitat affiliates across the United States.
