May 10, 2010 Some South Mississippi business women kicked off the heels and threw on a hard hat to help Habitat for Humanity build homes in a Gulfport neighborhood Friday. Among them, was Kathy Reed, a candidate for one of the Habitat homes under construction in the Conner's Garden subdivision on 35th Street. "You see us working power tools, you see us swinging hammers," Reed said. "You see us doing all this stuff out in the heat. I'm to benefit because I'm getting a house but they're doing it taking their time. It's just really nice." Reed is building sweat equity toward her future home. But the other women hammering away were there because they wanted to be a part of Habitat for Humanity's Women's Build Week. "The reason that it's right now before Mother's Day is to highlight the fact that more than 12 million children in the United States alone live in poverty," explained Lindsay Freise, a representative from Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Joan Tscheulin, a commercial sales specialist for Lowe's, was also working on the site. As a mother and grandmother, Tscheulin knows this hard work will all be worth it in the end. "I think it definitely touches from the heart," Tscheulin said. "If we can provide, you know, have a hand in providing a home for a child, a mother, a father, whatever... Then we're just happy to do that." Ladies from Island View Casino helping with the construction of one of the homes agree. But unlike Tscheulin's team from Lowe's, they're not always around power tools. Kathy Beeding, a Vice President at Island View admitted, "It's certainly something outside of our normal daily routine. I will say I don't know the last time I swung a hammer, but it feels good." After learning the tricks of a new trade, Habitat leaders hope the women will be inspired to continue volunteering in their communities. Because for this Gulfport neighborhood, they've helped build a strong foundation for families in need. Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast says 30 of the 40 homes in Conner's Gardens are complete. The remaining 10 homes should be finished sometime this summer.
