October 8, 2009 On Tuesday October 6, Habitat for Humanity of the MS Gulf Coast celebrated our first annual World Habitat Day. The event, which was founded by the United Nations in 1985 to raise awareness to world housing and poverty issues, took the form of a build. Despite tough economic times, local branches of Wells Fargo, Beau Rivage, Best Buy and Hancock Bank sponsored the event. More than 100 people helped to make steps toward eliminating poverty housing in the area. Representatives from the sponsoring organizations, along with local and out of state volunteers were among those present. Toiling under the blazing sun, volunteers made progress on a half-dozen homes at the Gulfport, MS build site. A lunch ceremony led by Gulfport mayor George Schloegel and HFHMGC CEO Chris Monforton reflected upon the issues of poverty and the need to work together to get things done.
