September 1, 2009 On Saturday, August 29, Habitat for Humanity of the MS Gulf Coast, along with Governor Haley Barbour and First Lady Marsha Barbour celebrated the progress made along the MS Gulf Coast since Hurricane Katrina made landfall in 2005. The event highlighted the completion of HFHMGC’s first large-scale development, The Trace, a twenty-eight house subdivision in Long Beach, MS. When Hurricane Katrina ripped through south MS in August, 2005, many of the decent, affordable housing options were destroyed or severely damaged. The housing need along the Coast became an immediate issue.
