HFHMGC is Changing the Face of the Community!

In January of 2007, Harrison County HFH and HFH of Jackson County merged organizations to form HFH of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, serving all of Harrison and Jackson & Stone counties. Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast has 200 homes under construction or completed since Katrina and is committed to serving families in need. We’re working hard to achieve our mission to build 800 homes by 2012.

Position Description

Position: AmeriCorps VISTA Land & Pre-Construction Assistant
Reports To: Pre-Construction Manager
Status: AmeriCorps VISTA/Full Time
Benefits: AmeriCorps VISTA living allowance, housing stipend, health insurance, sick and personal days, AmeriCorps Education Award.
Reviews: 90-day review and quarterly progress reports mandatory

Position Summary:
This twelve month AmeriCorps VISTA position will work under the supervision of the Pre-Construction Manager. The VISTA’s main objective will be working alongside current staff members to develop sustainable practices in the Land Acquisitions and Pre-Construction Department. The member will learn and improve processes for land research and purchasing, variance and subdivision requests, site and house plan development, the permitting process, and coordination of utility accounts. Overall, the VISTA will work to create a department with cohesive and sustainable practices, which will help increase the number of families served along the Gulf Coast.

Position Requirements:
• Special Consideration will be given to degreed applicants or those with related work experience
• The applicant must meet all criteria to qualify for the AmeriCorps VISTA program
• Knowledge and understanding of Habitat for Humanity and the AmeriCorps program
• Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with diverse population of city and municipal officials, real estate agents, prospective land sellers, construction supervisors, etc.
• Interest or experience in land acquisitions and development, house design, drafting, and site-plan development
• Advanced writing skills; ability to write in simple, clear, and concise format
• Advanced computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook). Experience with MS Access, MS Project, House Plan Drawing Software, MS Publisher encouraged.
• Critical thinking skills and ability to solve problems
• A flexible schedule and desire to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA for twelve months
